Ka\u015bka\u2019s mission was to collect high-quality SFX, and Sjoerd captured footage for Artlist&#8217;s catalog. The result is a short film jam-packed with visuals so jaw-dropping they could be CGI, but as both creators stress \u2013 there\u2019s just one main character, and her name is Iceland. }\n                });\n            }\n\n        });\n    <\/script>\n\n    \n<p>Sjoerd\u2019s mission was to share the sheer commitment it takes for Ka\u015bka to record her Icelandic sound effects for Artlist. Sjoerd lives in Haarlem, a city just outside Amsterdam, and Ka\u015bka, originally from Poland, has been living in Reykjav\u00edk since 2016.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t usually comment on these things,\u201d says Sjoerd, chatting over Zoom. \u201cBut the Dutch are super sarcastic, and Ka\u015bka is very Dutch in that regard. So from the first moment, it was easy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before the trip, Sjoerd wrote a list of sites he\u2019d like to visit but was disappointed to find them jam-packed with tourists upon arrival. \u201cJustin Bieber stood on this little patch of land in Iceland,\u201d Sjoerd says. \u201cAnd so many people stood there they had to fence it off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, Ka\u015bka had some tricks up her sleeve. \u201cI could see how disappointed Sjoerd was to see all the tourists,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd I could see how much he respected Iceland \u2013 so I decided to let him in on some of our secrets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They traveled to a spot that only locals knew about, with scenery even more impressive than the tourist hotspots. And, of course, it\u2019s much easier to record the sounds of nature when no one else is around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were so sick of the tourists,\u201d Sjoerd says. \u201cAnd then we went to these abandoned farms where the sound and images were way prettier. So I want to convey in this film that the tourist stuff is nice, but Iceland has so much more to offer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Ka\u015bka, seeing how deeply Sjoerd connected with Iceland meant the world to her. But for now, they\u2019ll keep the locations secret to protect them from tourism. \u201cThese places are for the explorers,\u201d Ka\u015bka says. \u201cThe ones who are brave enough to find something for themselves instead of just following the crowd.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Ka\u015bka\u2019s story<\/h2>\n<p>Ka\u015bka\u2019s Icelandic journey started in 2016 when she decided to move to Reykjav\u00edk from Poland. She\u2019d been an avid hiker in Poland and loved to record the soundscapes of her country. \u201cI wanted to capture the sounds that surrounded me, like the birds singing in the mountains or the sound of the streams,\u201d she says. Although Ka\u015bka has many skills, being a teacher is one of the most important parts of her life and work. Everything she creates as a sound and music producer is driven by the philosophy of teaching people to be present and listen.<\/p>\n<p>The natural beauty of Iceland blew Ka\u015bka away, so she began working as a tour guide. One day she met a visually impaired woman who came on the tour by herself. After a while, Ka\u015bka summoned up the courage to ask why she\u2019d come to Iceland if she can\u2019t see anything. \u201cThere\u2019s so much to experience here,\u201d the woman replied. \u201cTextures, sounds, smells, tastes. There\u2019s so much more than just the views.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That planted a seed in Ka\u015bka\u2019s mind to experience the beautiful landscapes through a sense other than her sight. Ka\u015bka is a musicologist, musician, and music producer with a keen ear and passion for creating music. So she set out with her recording equipment and started to build her music project, <a href=\"https:\/\/noisefromiceland.com\/\">Noise from Iceland<\/a>. But then Artlist reached out to ask if she\u2019d be interested in working together, and her passion soon became much more than a hobby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no idea how they found me,\u201d Ka\u015bka laughs. \u201cAt first, I thought it was someone making fun of me, but I checked it out, and everything seemed legit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ka\u015bka loves the fact her soundscapes live on in other people&#8217;s videos, and living in Iceland means she\u2019s never short of material or inspiration. }\n\n        });\n    <\/script>\n\n    \n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Sjoerd\u2019s story<\/h2>\n<p>Sjoerd started shooting videos when he was 13 years old, as part of Haarlem\u2019s skateboarding community. He loved it but didn\u2019t consider a future in it. Then, four years ago, he left his full-time job at a surf camp, bought a camera, jumped on a flight to Peru, and started filming. It immediately felt right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI shot this funny video of a guy who worked as a volunteer at a dog shelter and put it on my YouTube channel,\u201d he says. When he returned to the Netherlands, he worked as a production assistant, but his YouTube channel grew so quickly that he could soon sustain himself on filmmaking alone. That\u2019s when Artlist got in touch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI became an affiliate for Artlist, and the more my channel grew, the more I could do with Artlist.\u201d Says Sjoerd. \u201cIt happened really fast \u2013 in three and a half years, I went from having zero experience to working as a full-time filmmaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His filmmaking has taken him around the world, but he instantly knew a trip to Iceland would be something special. \u201cYou cannot compare Iceland to anywhere else,\u201d he says. \u201cWe have weird weather in Holland, but Iceland is another level. It\u2019ll be sunny, and ten minutes later, you\u2019re in a snowstorm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One day Ka\u015bka and Sjoerd were standing on S\u00f3lheimaj\u00f6kull, a glacier in southern Iceland nestled between the volcanoes Katla and Eyjafjallaj\u00f6kull. It started snowing heavily, which worried Sjoerd \u2013 but he knew he needed to take the risk to get the shot he needed. \u201cI flew my drone in the storm, my camera was completely soaked, my lens was frozen, my mic was jacked up \u2013 but the footage is sick,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>For Ka\u015bka, that unpredictability is what it\u2019s all about. \u201cThe main character of all my projects is Iceland,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m not doing much \u2013 I\u2019m just taking out the recorder, pressing the record button, and everything else Iceland does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Ka\u015bka is being modest, as many consider her work art. A few weeks ago, she recorded an erupting volcano. The surrounding moss had set alight, and there were wildfires everywhere she looked. She couldn\u2019t get close because of the smoke, so she decided to improvise. \u201cI recorded the sound of the burning moss, with the rumbling volcano in the distance,\u201d she says. \u201cSo in this way, it was more than documenting \u2013 I framed the sounds, just like a photographer frames a setting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One thing Ka\u015bka and Sjoerd share is a deep love and respect for Iceland. \u201cThe biggest thing I learned from this project was just being present,\u201d Sjoerd says. \u201cThat experience of being closer to nature just by listening to it is something that I hope
