It\u2019s been that way ever since he picked up a pair of drumsticks when he was 4 at his local church in Miami. Today he\u2019s one\u00a0<a href="\&quot;https:\/\/artlist.io\/royalty-free-music\/artist\/duce-williams\/88duce-williams\&quot;">of Artlist\u2019s top performing artists<\/a>, probably because he doesn\u2019t adhere to rules or genres &#8211; he\u2019s just as happy producing eerie cinematic soundscapes as he is grimy bass lines. But Folk music is his true love. He\u2019s wearing a black t-shirt with Peggy Gou, Carl Cox and Honey Dijon written in bold white lettering. He\u2019s ridiculously likable. Warm, friendly, engaged, with a rasping chuckle as infectious as the Delta variant. The stuff that settles in New York or California, they tested in Miami. There\u2019s a lot of Latin and Caribbean culture, and they bring their music with them.\u201d Duce explains that his family\u2019s from the Bahamas, so he was going to church before he was born. His first steps were soundtracked by euphoric church choir productions, although the word choir doesn\u2019t quite do it justice. They had bassists, drummers, guitarists, sound designers and pianists. The church wrote its own tracks and released its own albums. It was more of a gospel orchestra than a choir.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For many young artists, church is more than a springboard &#8211; it\u2019s a world-class musical education.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cYou know, people don&#8217;t realize that a lot of musicians come from the gospel world,\u201d Duce says. &#8220;They started in their local church &#8211; like Justin Bieber, Jay-Z. They&#8217;re church guys.\u201d Duce was 4 when he first snuck into church to bang on their drum kit, and after a couple of months, the choir let him play with them live. \u201cYou\u2019d think [the church] would be very soft and nurturing, but it\u2019s actually very hardcore,\u201d Duce says. &#8220;It&#8217;s like, you learn to play good or you don&#8217;t get to participate. It&#8217;s like sink or swim.\u201d He learned bass from Emmy award-winning bass player Shaka Pace and mastering from Latin Grammy-award-winning audio engineer Mike Fuller. It\u2019s funny, he says, because his parents aren\u2019t particularly musical, and no one was pushing him, but he took to music like a duck takes to water, and just as naturally. For many young artists, church is more than a springboard &#8211; it\u2019s a world-class musical education.<\/p>\n<p>Duce says the turning point came in middle school when he downloaded the programming software Fruity Loops. \u201cI didn&#8217;t have a studio, I just had a computer. And Fruity Loops had different squares, different beats, and I just started producing.\u201d He stops himself, chuckling. \u201cI shouldn\u2019t call it producing &#8211; I started messing around with Fruity Loops.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceNonEditable embeditem\" data-embed-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CvlkjZTUljQ\" data-embed-height=\"384\" data-embed-width=\"800\" data-embed-constrain=\"true\"><iframe id=\"513362819\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CvlkjZTUljQ?feature=oembed&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fnew-blog.artlist.io\" width=\"683\" height=\"384\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-1_19=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-2140032_148=\"true\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>When Duce was 22, he and his wife flew to New South Wales, Australia, to study Worship Music. \u201cI went to this humongous church, this gigantic, ginormous church named Hillsong. They have a college inside of the church and that\u2019s where I studied.\u201d Again, this isn\u2019t some church choir &#8211; Hillsong is a global, multi-award-winning music academy. They have 3.75m subscribers on YouTube. They write, produce and release groundbreaking music accompanied by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?app=desktop&amp;v=6UQRYaKLQZo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-anchor=\"?app=desktop&amp;v=6UQRYaKLQZo\">high-budget music videos<\/a>\u00a0with professional backup dancers and creative art direction. And it\u2019s not just gospel &#8211; they release Trap, Hip Hop, Pop, Rock. Justin Timberlake, Whitney Houston, Katy Perry, Aretha Franklin. They\u2019re church guys. Duce says he feels just as comfortable on stage performing to 30,000 people as he does sitting here, talking to me over Zoom. Church, he says, defined his life in countless ways.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I&#8217;m a numbers guy, and I&#8217;m a business guy. is always writing music. He\u2019s written 10 albums and 10 EPs under the name Duce Haus, 2 albums under Duce Williams, and that\u2019s not counting the many dozens of tracks he shares on Artlist. Music isn\u2019t even his full-time job. Duce is a father of 2, runs his own media company and used to work as a worship pastor and creative director at Potential Church in Miami. When I ask how he finds the time, he shrugs like it just happens by accident &#8211; like making music is something that happens to him, not the other way around.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/new-blog.artlist.io\/royalty-free-music\/album\/duce-haus\/1317\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-974 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/new-blog.artlist.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/ca1418753d8b56eb833f912df8a3c323a1459275.jpg\" alt=\"600\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/new-blog.artlist.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/ca1418753d8b56eb833f912df8a3c323a1459275.jpg 600w, https:\/\/new-blog.artlist.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/ca1418753d8b56eb833f912df8a3c323a1459275-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2018Duce Haus\u2019 features various vocalists singing evocative lyrics, electronic percussion<\/p>\n<p>and synths in an immaculate production.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceNonEditable embeditem\" data-embed-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Zr0nAGuFblk\" data-embed-height=\"384\" data-embed-width=\"800\" data-embed-constrain=\"true\"><iframe id=\"241534866\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Zr0nAGuFblk?feature=oembed&amp;enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fnew-blog.artlist.io\" width=\"683\" height=\"384\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-1_19=\"true\" data-gtm-yt-inspected-2140032_148=\"true\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Duce is proud to be independent. He\u2019s been sent contracts from labels in the past but took one look at them and threw them in the trash. \u201cThey always want me to be a rapper,\u201d he says, &#8220;and I&#8217;m like &#8211; how am I gonna make any money with this? And [they want me to] sign away everything I create. Why would I do that?\u201d Duce started working with Artlist in 2015 and says it suits him down to the ground. \u201cLike, I can&#8217;t say this enough &#8211; Like they\u2019re putting your song in front of tons of people who understand your music. It\u2019s extremely fair.\u201d Duce\u2019s music has been snapped up by Fila, Huawei and Volkswagen, not to mention countless films, fashion shows and video projects worldwide.<\/p>\n<h2>Collaborating with Artlist Original<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/new-blog.artlist.io\/royalty-free-music\/album\/lunar-metal\/5188\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-975 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/new-blog.artlist.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/e1ede7b17f04b1f19074228f78828002e1d27e32.jpg\" alt=\"599\" width=\"598\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/new-blog.artlist.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/e1ede7b17f04b1f19074228f78828002e1d27e32.jpg 598w, https:\/\/new-blog.artlist.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/e1ede7b17f04b1f19074228f78828002e1d27e32-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 598px) 100vw, 598px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For his latest EP,\u00a0\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/new-blog.artlist.io\/royalty-free-music\/album\/lunar-metal\/5188\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lunar Metal<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>Duce teamed up with Artlist\u2019s in-house label\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/artlist.io\/royalty-free-music\/artist\/the-originals\/877\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Artlist Original<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s a soulful, cinematic album,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s uplifting, inspirational soul with aspects of gospel and worship.\u201d Duce says it was a challenge to make this album as the requirements were so unique. \u201cWe wanted to include industrial, cinematic soundscapes, which was challenging because I had no point of reference. But I had to swallow my ego and create the structure and put my own style on top.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Whatever you&#8217;re creating, try to make it a place where you can be as free as possible.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When I ask what his plans are for the future, Duce says he\u2019ll continue to make music until the day he dies. He feels confident in his process and his abilities and says if he found out 50 million people were going to listen to one of his tracks, he wouldn\u2019t make any changes. His dream is to spend all day long making Folk music. He\u2019d like to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/new-blog.artlist.io\/blog\/how-to-start-a-youtube-channel\/\">start a YouTube channel<\/a>\u00a0and just write, produce, release, repeat from morning \u2018til night. But he\u2019s pretty happy with the way things are right now. He has creative freedom to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants, and says this is his definition of success. \u201cWhatever you&#8217;re creating, try to make it a place where you can be as free as
